Vintage Japanese guitars! 1980 and 1981 Westbury Custom (and Custom-S) modeled on the Gibson Les Paul Custom and the Super Custom. Not that many of these around. I had them both worked on by the world-famous luthier, John Caruthers, at the same time. It was re-fretted (which is expensive due to the binding on the neck), the bridge replaced with a brass bridge, and the nut replaced by John, so it's set up to be played as is. Sometimes when you can even find these guitars, they need a fret job, but both of these have brand new frets.
Westbury custom
It's a Tobacco Sunburst, swell-top guitar with a maple body, two symetric cut-aways (sort of like a SG, but the top is carved!), a glue on neck, carved top, German carve around the edge and shallow scallops in the cutaways. The head is shaped similar to an Aria and has an inlaid "W" logo, the fretboard is bound ebony with Les Paul style crown inlays. The guitar has a wide, flat bridge and a stop tail. It has two humbuckers, with a volume and tone each, and a 3 way switch located behind the stop tail. The guitar has a 6-position varitone with 18 possible sound selections. The selector puts either pickup in single coil, double coil, single out-of-phase, or double out-of-phase modes.
The prototype for this guitar was the "Univox Westbury performer" built in Japan by Matsumoku in 1976. It's a symmetrical, double cut-away, joined neck design made from Canadian Hard Rock Maple with an Ebony fingerboard inlayed with Les Paul type deluxe trapezoidal position markers. Other than the new brass bridge, the hardware is gold plated with some wear and includes Deluxe Close Ratio tuning machines, DiMarzio DUAL SOUND pickups with a 3-position pickup selector. It has a 6-position programmer for single or double coil pickup combinations as well as "out of phase" modes and a Long-travel adjustable bridge with a Stud Tailpiece. The top of the guitar is arched and carved and the rear has a hip contour for comfort.
Westbury custom-s
The top of the Custom-S is arched and carved and the rear was cut with a hip contour for comfort. It is Cherry Sunburst with gorgeous triple tortoise binding on top, gold hardware, a pair of DiMarzio Dual Sound humbuckers, bound head and ebony fretboard, mother of pearl crown inlays, wide bridge and 6 position varitone like the Custom. The bridge is oval and the back was contoured.
The Westbury Custom-S was not only the "top of the line" in Westbury Guitars, but arguably for all of the Matsumoku made guitars. The Custom-S is a Joined-neck design with deluxe Mother Of Pearl, trapezoid inlays on an Ebony fingerboard. It has a beautiful Tortoise-shell over cream binding throughout the neck and headstock. The hardware includes Deluxe Close Ratio tuning machines, custom-matched DiMarzio DUAL SOUND pickups, a 3 position pickup selector and a 6-position Pickup Programmer for single, double coil pickup combinations as well as "out of phase" modes. The Custom-S is accompanied with a Long-travel adjustable bridge with a stud tailpiece. Oh yeah, other than the new brass bridge, the hardware is gold plated brass with some wear.
